Guardian Kobujitsu

Vocabulary: A Guardian is "one who guards and protects." "Kobu" means "weapon" or more precisely "implement or tool" (ko) of "war" or "stopping war" (bu - which has both meanings). "Jitsu" is "technique." Guardian Kobujitsu is "the weapon technique of one who guards and protects."

Guardian Kobujitsu focuses on three primary weapons - the Bo (long staff), the Sword, the Escrima (short stick). From the Bo, we learn to control distance and range, the strengths and limitations of a two handed weapon, and how to strike and block properly without damaging oneself. From the Sword, we learn how to switch between one handed and two handed fighting, how cutting weapons work, and the different properties of different styles of sword fighting. From the Escrima, we learn to be ambidextrous, generating power with either hand and using a weapon in unexpected ways.

We also learn a variety of secondary weapons. We train extensively with the knife. We also train with the spear and naginata (halberd - like a staff with a sword blade).

Four to Six Years for a Black Belt

We spend eight months focused on each weapon, learning skills, sets, and an entire form with the bo (staff), sword and escrima (club). By the end of an eight month block, a student should have proficiency with that weapon and be ready to use it or any reasonable approximation (a broom or mop for a Bo, a stick or hammer for an Escrima, etc.).

More Than Just Movement

Guardian Kobujitsu is about more than movement. The physical aspect of training is important, of course, but martial arts is about a lot more than fighting. In each class some time in invested in discussing a topic relevant to training, that day's drill or new skill, or life. Traditionally, asian weapon arts focused on spirituality because the ancient masters believed that someone with the power to cause great harm must be moral. Creating well rounded, insightful martial artists that master Life as well as karate is important.
