Parents want children in karate for discipline, self control, honor, obedience and responsibility. Children want to have fun, punch, kick and get prizes. Little Guardians is a beginning class for young children that gives children what they want and gives parents what they want. Parental authority is strongly supported and parents gain additional tools to help instill character in their children at home.

It's fun, it's powerful, and kids learn important concepts like Honor, Truth, Obedience, Responsibility, Helpfulness, Hard Work, Wisdom, and Never Give Up. Kids earn stars and headbands and get to buy prizes with their stars every eight weeks. Little Guardians meets one time per week.

One Year to Black Headband

It takes about One Year to reach Black Headband. Students start with White, then Yellow, Orange, Purple, Red, Brown and then their goal: Black Headband! Headbands are awarded about every other months based mostly upon how many stars a child earned (see Parent Support).

Session by Session Emphasis

Each session of Little Guardian Karate has an emphasis, all of which also include practicing Basic Form - the combination of moves we use as a foundation for nearly everything we do in this class. The details of the form are left to the session with that emphasis. The schedule below is approximate, since long months, short months and holidays can slightly alter them, but this is a general idea of what we emphasize and about when we focus on it.

  • January/February: Basic Form Beginning, Blocks, Stances
  • March/April: Speed, Timing, Coordination
  • May/June: Punches and Twist the Hip
  • July/August: Leadership and Teamwork
  • September/October: Kicks
  • November/December: Falling, Rolling and Balance

Students also learn the Guardian Knights Scripts, which are required to move through the headbands. You can find the scripts by clicking here. For more on the Guardian Knights program, please click here.

After Two Years

Junior Guardian Karate repeats the same material every two years. Each time through, students are expected to perform it better. The first time through they should be able to do it groups and by following commands. The second time through they should be able to lead and do it by themselves, and do it with power and precision. The third time through they should be able to teach it, give commands, and run classes. In Six Years, after three times through, the student should be ready for a Junior Guardian Karate Black Belt.

Some exceptional students might be able to complete a Black Belt in only four years. These students would also do well in the adult Guardian Karate class and might choose to pursue Black Belt in both at the same time.

A student who completes all the material in Junior Guardian Karate and then transfers to Guardian Karate will probably be able to earn an adult Black Belt in four more years. A Guardian Karate Black Belt should be able to do it in two more years.
